Common name: Pink Jasmine / Stephan's Jasmine

Description: Jasminum x stephanense is a vigorous and distinctive hybrid jasmine — a cross between Jasminum beesianum and Jasminum officinale — that combines the best qualities of both parents. It produces clusters of delicately fragrant, pale blush-pink flowers throughout June and July, offering a softer, more unusual colour than the classic white of common jasmine. The foliage is particularly attractive, with young leaves often showing attractive creamy-yellow variegation that adds interest before the plant comes into flower. The vigorous, twining stems make it an excellent choice for covering pergolas, arches, and large boundary walls at speed.

Other benefits: unusual pale pink fragrant flowers; attractive variegated young foliage; vigorous and fast-covering; less commonly grown than common jasmine, offering something a little different

Wildlife attraction: bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects attracted by the fragrant flowers

Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 5–6m x 3m

Position: full sun to partial shade; best flowering and fragrance in a warm, sheltered position; south- or west-facing aspect preferred

Soil pH: slightly acid to slightly alkaline (pH 6.0–7.5); fertile, well-drained soil preferred

Moisture: moderate watering required in the first season; once established, tolerates drier conditions; benefits from mulching around the base to retain moisture

Winter hardiness: hardy to approximately -10°C; best given a sheltered position in colder parts of the UK
