Donizetti (1797-1848)
Description:
Henry II, King of England in the 12th century, and his older wife Leonora (Eleanor-Alienor d'Aquitaine). The king, seeking to enrich his heart, takes Rozmonda, a young and innocent beauty, as his concubine. She falls in love with him without knowing his true identity, but the king, fearing that Leonora will discover her existence, imprisons her in a secluded palace, and in her loneliness, Rozmonda falls in love with Arturo, his faithful attendant. In her loneliness, ROSMONDA falls in love with Arturo, a loyal attendant, while the noble Eleanor is enraged by her husband's betrayal... Donizetti's opera "ROSMONDA OF ENGLAND" was first performed in Florence in 1834, but soon disappeared from the repertoire. It was revived only once in 1845, but since then it has been completely forgotten. In 1994, René Fleming recorded the entire opera, but it too did not make a big splash. This time, 171 years after the 1845 revival, the 2016 performance in Bergamo was so wonderful that it made one realize that this opera is extremely charming. The beauty of Jessica Pratt in the title role, as well as Eva May's powerful singing as Leonora, and the beautiful costumes, enhanced the work to the fullest. Naxos Japan
