Description:
Kamasi Washington's First Film Score "Becoming" to be Released on LP! Kamasi Washington, one of the leading saxophonists and composers in the jazz scene, has released his first film score, "Becoming," on a long-awaited LP edition. The album features 15 tracks, including new songs written for the documentary film directed by Nadia Halgren about former First Lady Michelle Obama, which was released on NETFLIX in May 2020, as well as re-recorded past tracks. Kamasi wrote and produced all of the songs, and is joined by familiar faces from Next Step, including Ryan Porter, Miles Mosley, Cameron Graves, and Tony Austin, as well as his father Ricky Washington, and trumpeters D'Angelo, Jill Scott, and Lauryn Hill. In addition, trumpeter Dontay Winslow, who has backed the likes of D'Angelo, Jill Scott, and Lauryn Hill, New York contemporary improviser Sean Sandaregger, and LA's own Kenneth Crouch have participated in the recording sessions. The title track "Becoming," a light mellow song clothed in fresh exuberance, the ballad "Song For Fraser," with its gentle saxophone brooding against an all too austere piano, and "I Am Becoming," which is a refreshingly fresh performance of West Coast jazz with simple themes and melodies that shimmer beautifully, while remaining close to the screen.
