The AGM Taipan TM15-256 is a mid-level thermal monocular built around a 256x192 vanadium oxide uncooled focal plane array sensor with a 12 µm pixel pitch and a long-wave infrared response waveband of 8–14 µm. It delivers 1.5x–12x magnification onto a 720x540 LCOS display, detects a 6-foot object at up to 710 meters, and weighs 280 g (0.62 lb). Designed for hunters, hikers, and general outdoor use, it runs up to 8 hours on its built-in rechargeable lithium battery and carries a 3-year transferable warranty.
At the core of the TM15-256 sits a vanadium oxide uncooled focal plane array with 256x192 resolution and a 12 µm pixel pitch. Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference (NETD) measures less than 35 mK at 25°C (F#=1.0), which indicates the sensor resolves fine temperature gradients across a scene. The detector refreshes at 25 Hz while the LCOS display outputs at 50 Hz, producing fluid motion rendering during panning or target tracking. The response waveband covers 8–14 µm (long-wave infrared), the band most effective for detecting body heat from humans and animals.
Four palette options — Black Hot, White Hot, Red Hot, and Fusion — let users tune contrast presentation to ambient conditions or personal preference. Adaptive AGC (Automatic Gain Control), DDE (Detail Display Enhancement), and 3D DNR (Digital Noise Reduction) process the raw sensor data in real time, pulling detail out of low-contrast scenes without user intervention.
The 15 mm focal length lens with an F1.0 aperture collects the maximum thermal energy relative to its size class, contributing to the sub-35 mK NETD figure. The field of view measures 11.69° horizontal by 8.78° vertical. Digital zoom steps through 1x, 2x, 4x, and 8x, with the full zoom range expressed as 1.5x–12x optical-plus-digital combined. Diopter adjustment spans -3 to +1 dpt, accommodating a wide range of eyesight without requiring corrective lenses.
Highest-temperature spot tracking automatically detects and marks the hottest point in the frame — useful for locating a heat source in a cluttered scene. Distance measurement activates after the user marks the top and bottom of a target and enters the target's known height, then displays the calculated range in meters or yards. Digital zoom display labels the active zoom level on-screen. Auto Power Off and Sleep modes preserve battery charge during pauses in use.
Flat Field Correction (FFC) runs in Auto, Manual, or External Correction modes, periodically recalibrating the detector array to eliminate fixed-pattern noise. The built-in 8 GB memory module records video and captures snapshots without a memory card. CVBS output is available via the USB Type-C port for external display connectivity.
The TM15-256 broadcasts a Wi-Fi hotspot that pairs with the AGM Connect app on a smartphone. Through the app, users can capture snapshots, record video, and adjust device parameters remotely. Note that Wi-Fi operation reduces battery life below the 8-hour maximum — AGM publishes the 8-hour figure with Wi-Fi off. The USB Type-C interface handles charging and CVBS video output.
The housing carries an IP67 protection rating, meaning it withstands total dust ingress and submersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. Drop-test height is rated at 1.5 m (4.9 ft). Operating temperature spans -20°C to 55°C (-4°F to 131°F). Overall dimensions measure 158 x 61 x 57 mm (6.23 x 2.4 x 2.2 in). The device ships with a USB cable, three lanyards, an EU plug adapter, a lens cloth, and an operation manual.
It detects a 6-foot (approximately 1.8 m) object at up to 710 meters. Detection range describes the distance at which a target can be identified as a heat source. Identification range — the distance at which you can determine what the target is — will be shorter and depends on conditions, target contrast, and display settings.
Up to 8 hours of continuous use with the Wi-Fi hotspot function turned off. Activating Wi-Fi for AGM Connect app streaming reduces that figure. The battery is built-in and rechargeable via the USB Type-C port at 5 VDC / 2 A.
Yes. The TM15-256 has 8 GB of built-in storage and records video and captures snapshots without a memory card. Files can be transferred to a computer via USB or shared wirelessly through the AGM Connect app when Wi-Fi is active.
Four palettes are available: Black Hot, White Hot, Red Hot, and Fusion. White Hot is a common starting point in open terrain. Black Hot increases perceived contrast in dense foliage. Red Hot and Fusion highlight warm targets with color emphasis, which can help separate an animal from a warm background at longer distances.
Yes, it carries an IP67 rating, meaning it is fully dust-tight and withstands submersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. The housing also passes a 1.5 m drop test. It operates across a -20°C to 55°C temperature range, covering most field conditions.
