When the two first met a few years ago, they almost immediately knew they wanted to make music together. Bavota was already a fan of Akda's dreamy orchestral folk, and Akda saw the potential in Bavota's intimate, painterly piano compositions that he would love to work with. And the isolation and loneliness brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic offered the opportunity to make an album together without being in the same room. The album, A Closer Distance, was originally planned as a short EP of a couple of songs and was the result of a month of seemingly endless, effortless production by Bavota and Akuda. It was composed and recorded at their respective homes.Akuda, who has collaborated with artists as diverse as Lowe's Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker and master guitarist Bill Frisell, was amazed at the ease and speed with which this work was completed. It's a strange, natural process," he says. It awakened a part of me that had been asleep for a while. Built around Bavota's solitary piano arrangements and Akuda's ethereal, multi-recorded vocals, the songs on A Closer Distance reflect their concept of intimacy and serenity. This is a magical work that connects with the listener with the same comfort and familiarity that inspired its creation.
