Paul Revere's iconic engraving, "Bloody Massacre Perpetrated in Kings Street in Boston," was created just three weeks after the tragic Boston Massacre. The artwork quickly became a powerful piece of propaganda, rallying patriots and fueling the fight for independence from British rule.

In 1770, tensions in Boston were high, with 4,000 British soldiers stationed in a city of only 15,000. On March 5th, a group of colonial laborers and merchant sailors began throwing snowballs and rocks at the British soldiers, leading to a panic and eventual gunfire. The chaos left five civilian colonists dead or gravely injured, including Crispus Attucks, a Black merchant sailor who had escaped slavery two decades prior.

While Revere is often credited with creating the original drawing, it was actually the work of a young illustrator named Henry Pelham. Revere, a skilled engraver but not an artist, traced Pelham's drawing to create his engraving. This led to a public feud between the two men, with Pelham accusing Revere of plagiarism in the Boston Gazette. At the time, copying another's work was not considered a crime, but the controversy adds an interesting layer to this historic tale.
