Senegalese vocalist Omar Pene recorded with his group Super Diamono at Real World in 1996 and is now being reissued. Digipak with a new jacket. At the time, Péné had been with Diamono for over 20 years, and in the 80s the band had become so strong and popular that it was split in popularity with the mighty Youssou N'Dour. Both artists had roots in Senegal's explosive syncopated dance music, mubarak, and were pivotal to the development of contemporary music in Senegal. But instead of the traditional tamato talking drums, Diamono uses horns and guitar, folds in reggae, and navigates jazz chords. The force was at its peak when they performed a live session on this 1996 album, which featured the tough electric sounding Ousmane So on keyboards, that took everyone's breath away.Penné's voice is also deep, melodic, and unreasonably soulful, and his own socially conscious songs such as "Giande," a toe-tapper about courage, "Soweto," a guitar-driven song about South African townships, and "Diaraf," Penné's favorite anthem for the Dakar soccer team. The songs, which can be heard in tune, are instruments of true emotion. The album captures the dance band and the lead singer in their element, thriving with collective energy and having a good time.
