Binding sound in v.1 and slightly weak at front hinge in v.2, which is slightly more worn. Text is clean and unmarked throughout. V.1 has six fold-out maps and sections – the three maps are slightly foxed – and 218 woodcuts. V.2 has 2 fold-out maps, 16 fossil plates and 256 woodcuts. The large fold-out geological map of Europe that should be in v.2 as the frontispiece was removed. Another loose copy is supplied but, as it was issued as a separate print for sale, it is too large to fit the book format. The map, 53 x 65cm, is a linen-backed colour print, very worn along the folds and in only fair condition. Otherwise, the two volumes are in good to very good condition.
