  • In Japan, a crane and a turtle are said to live for a thousand years—symbols of longevity and good fortune. With this in mind, these artisanal urushi chopsticks were designed with the hope that they would be used and cherished for a long time. They feature the smooth, comfortable feel and durability unique to traditional lacquerware, along with a glossy yet translucent finish. The handle is decorated with a unique tortoiseshell pattern, making them especially meaningful as a gift. The lacquer coating also resists water, oil, stains, and odors for long-lasting everyday use.

Yamachiku use only locally-grown and sustainably-harvested Moso bamboo from Kumamoto and Fukuoka—a thick, fast-growing variety that can reach 20 meters (65 ft) in just six months but must mature for 3–5 years to be strong enough for their chopsticks.

The chopstick-making process involves 30 steps, taking 40 days for hand-painted chopsticks and 80 days for lacquered ones. Yamachiku handles everything from forest to finished chopstick.
