This optical phenomenon, called chatoyancy, occurs when light reflects off parallel bundles of tiny hollow tubes or fibrous crystals within the gemstone. When the stone is cut into a cabochon (domed top, flat bottom), the reflected light is focused into a bright band on the surface, which is perpendicular to the direction of the fibers or hollow tubes.
