Born in Bohemia to an upper class family, he studied composition with Dvořák at the Prague Conservatory. The composer Novák had a privileged background that Brahms recognized his work and recommended him to the famous publisher Zimrock. In his early years, Novák wrote impressionist-influenced works, but when he fell in love with the talented young singer Yavková at the age of 26, his style underwent a major shift, and from then on he began to produce a series of picturesque, colorful works that incorporated the essence of Bohemian folk music with a profound sound reminiscent of Wagner.
