As a photographer, Diamond Beach has always held a special place in my heart. I’ve captured it in all kinds of light — from golden sunrises to glowing sunsets — when the ice crystals scattered across the beach catch the light and shimmer like glass. But this image, taken from above on an overcast day, reveals a different kind of beauty.

Without the sun, the scene becomes minimalist and abstract — a quiet palette of just three colors. The black volcanic sand, the white foam of the breaking waves, and the vivid blue of glacial ice form a natural canvas of striking contrast. The intricate, random water patterns around the icebergs create a texture that’s almost painterly. About the Location

Diamond Beach, located near Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in Southeast Iceland, is one of the country’s most iconic and otherworldly destinations. Here, chunks of ice break off from the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and wash ashore, where they shimmer like diamonds against the stark black sand. It’s a favorite spot for landscape photographers, especially in winter, when the light is soft and the contrast is most dramatic.
