Performed by the Freddie Hubbard Quintet in October 1979. Freddie Hubbard spent five years as an exclusive member of Columbia from 1974 to 1979, and this is a live performance he gave while leading his own regular group to Europe. The performance is hard, which is a departure from the fusion albums of the larger ensemble albums of Columbia. Freddie is in top form playing with veteran saxophonist Hadley Kaliman, whose performance in Santana's "Caravanserai" was also impressive, and with Billy Childs, who has just made his debut (recall his strong performance when he visited Japan as a member of V.S.O.P. a few months before this album). He performed five of his own compositions, including "Love Connection," the title track from the Columbia album, the masterpiece "Little Sunflower," and "One Of A Kind," which is also known as part of the V.S.O.P. repertoire, as well as his signature ballad, "Hole in the Sea," from the V.S.O.P. repertoire. The selection of "Here's That Rainy Day" is the best composition of Freddie's repertoire at that time. The hard and sharp phrasing backed by perfect control is truly unique to Freddie, and you can fully enjoy Freddie's greatness as a player, which could not be heard in the Columbia albums of the time.One Of A Kind," featuring a versatile drum solo by Carl Burnett and a tenor solo by Hadley Kaliman's unique compositional skills, is a performance in which the quintet's abilities are on full display, and although it runs over 25 minutes, there are no slack moments and the listener is never bored. The quintet's ability is 100% demonstrated in the performance of "One Of A Kind," which runs over 25 minutes.
