Description:

Bluesy improvisational live performance at Whiskey A Go-Go for FM broadcast 4 months after their debut! Rare live FM broadcast recording from the band's debut year in 1969! Humble Pie was formed by Peter Frampton (g), formerly of The Hard, Greg Ridley (b), formerly of Spooky Tooth, Jerry Shirley (ds), who was making his substantial debut with this band, and Steve Marriott (vo), who had left Small Faces. At first, the band advocated a progressive blues rock style, but gradually Marriott's soulful vocals came to the fore and the band took on a more boogie-soul tone. The early members of the band recorded a powerful live album "Performance Rockin' the Fillmore" (1971), but in the early days of the band, they played a more bluesy style with progressive arrangements. At this show, too, the band did not perform the original "Natural Born Bugie," which was a hit at the time, but played mainly cover songs. The Yardbirds' "For Your Love" played in an arrangement somewhat reminiscent of Zeppelin's acoustic style. Johnny Kidd & The Pirates' "Shakin' All Over," also performed by The Who and Van Morrison, is played in a heavy blues-rock style for 12 minutes. Marriott's idol Ray Charles' "Hallelujah I Love Her So" is performed in a boogie style. Dr. John's "I Walk On Gilded Splinters" was played live, each time over 20 minutes long with improvisation. Again, the five songs were played for more than 50 minutes, and the audience could enjoy the style unique to the early days of the band.
