Susan Allen, Kreutzer Quartet
Description:
Gloria Coates, one of the leading figures in American contemporary music, has been creating experimental works using overtones and clusters since the age of 9. After graduating from Columbia University, she began her career as a composer. She is also a talented singer, actress, and painter, and her painting "Parallel Univers" adorns the cover of the album. The Piano Quintet is rooted in the poetry of Emily Dickinson and uses the subtlety of the quartet to great effect to create a shimmering light. Symphony No. 10 is based on the motif of the "ancient Celtic ruins" discovered in Erding, Bavaria. The music about the ruins, which are in danger of being destroyed due to the construction of a highway, describes the blowing wind from the beginning, and the shaking sound is exquisitely colored by percussion accents. Susan Allen, who conducted the symphony, is an accomplished harpist. This performance was her conducting debut, but unfortunately she became ill and died about a year after the performance. This album is also a memorial to her. Naxos Japan
