The Via Francigena, also known as the Road to Rome or the Frankish Route, extends over almost 2000 km/ 1240 miles. The Via Francigena route starts in Canterbury, England, and leads you through parts of France and Switzerland to its final destination of Rome in Italy. Along the way, you will travel on mountain paths, dirt roads lined by cypress, rural roads, and old mule tracks until you reach the ancient cobblestones of Rome. Some of the highlights along the Via Francigena walk are the Dover Cliffs, the Champagne Region, Lake Geneva, the beautiful Alps, the Apennines, the famous hills of Tuscany, and the beautiful city of Sienna. Historically the trail was an important road and well-known pilgrimage route for those traveling to Rome from the North. Bishop Sigeric of Canterbury was the first to embark on the Via Francigena Pilgrimage in 990 AD to receive honors from the Pope in Rome. As he recorded his travels in detail, his journey became the start of the Via Francigena as we know it today.
