It is a beneficial fish for a 50 gallon tank, since it is considered a cleaner and picks parasites off of its tank mates. As it grows up to 10 inches in the wild, the Spanish Hogfish needs to be kept in a tank not less than 150 gallon if an adult. It is aggressive towards smaller, docile fish that are easily bullied. The Spanish Hogfish mainly feeds on snails, worms, mussels, small fish, shrimp, and squid, that is why it is not considered safe for a reef tank or environment. It thrives well in a temperature range of 72-78 degrees Fahrenheit and pH of 8.1-8.4. The Spanish Hogfish is easy to keep and that makes it a very good choice for a beginner aquarist. It needs plenty of live rock that simulates the natural habitat in wild. The Spanish Hogfish is carnivores and needs a diet that includes Mysis and Brine Shrimp either frozen or live along with a wide variety of other frozen foods. The Spanish Hogfish is a very hardy tropical reef fish species that will do well in larger aquariums with strong filtration and good water movement. It is very active swimmer that appreciates adequate space in the aquarium in which it swims along with small to moderate amounts of live rock. The Spanish Hogfish should not be kept with crustaceans, invertebrates or small fish unless they are intended as food items. It requires a strong mechanical, biological and chemical filtration to cope with the large amounts of waste produced by larger fish species.
