"Ganlan hu" (橄榄壶), literally "olive teapot," is a traditional Chinese teapot form whose contours are inspired by the small, rounded olive fruit. The shape is most commonly associated with Yixing (Zisha) teapots from Jiangsu province, where potters for centuries developed compact, hand-friendly vessels for gongfu-style brewing. While exact origin stories vary, olive-shaped examples became popular among collectors and literati from the late Ming into the Qing period as part of a broader taste for naturalistic, restrained forms that emphasized workmanship and clay tone over elaborate glaze.

The form is typically low and slightly oblate, with a smooth, rounded body that gently tapers toward a modest shoulder and a snug fitting lid. Spout and handle are usually short and proportioned to produce a balanced, steady pour; the lid knob often echoes the motif by resembling a small stem or bud. Because of its compact volume and comfortable ergonomics, the ganlan hu suits concentrated, multiple short infusions of high-quality leaf teas and showcases the micro-porous qualities of Yixing clay. Modern makers may adapt the silhouette with carved leaves, incisions, or alternate clays, but the essential visual cue remains the simple, fruit-like outline.
