Beethoven specialist Rudolf Buchbinder's first transfer to Deutsche Grammophon! A new collection based on the Diabelli Variations, commemorating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth. Buchbinder recorded Beethoven's Diabelli Variations early in his career. This time he commissioned 11 contemporary composers to record variations on Diabelli themes for Deutsche Grammophon, and he will travel with the program. His chosen composers are Rodion Sichedrin, Brett Dean, Max Richter, Jörg Wittmann, Toshio Hosokawa, Leila Auerbach, Brad Loveman, Philippe Manoury, Johannes Maria Staudt, Christian Joost, and Tan Dun. Buchbinder's new commission reflects the original story behind the Diabelli Variations: in 1819, music publisher and composer Anton Diabelli composed a 32-bar waltz theme and sent it to over 50 Austrian composers, who each wrote variations on the theme He asked them to write variations on the theme.Diabelli received variations from Carl Czerny, Franz Schubert, Mozart's son Franz Xaver Mozart, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, and Franz Liszt, who was only eight years old. Beethoven initially refused to write variations, but four years later he sent his publisher 33 variations on a waltz theme by Diabelli. Later praised by conductor Hans von Bülow as "the epitome of Beethoven's genius," the variations were Beethoven's last completed large-scale piano work. Green color label coated.
