250 GT ‘GTO Prototype #2’

A second, very similarly modified 250 GT SWB chassis and engine combination was kept at the factory overseen by chief engineer Giotto Bizzarrini, who developed bodywork and various other chassis modifications in-house, Often referred to as GTO prototype #2, the car was based on another 250 GT chassis - either #2053GT or possibly 0523GT or 1791GT. The bodywork was extremely rough, unpainted and still sporting all the hammer marks, rough welds and rivets from the body shop, but the design displayed many of the features which became standard on the production GTOs.

These included the low nose and high ‘Kamm’ style rear, engine bay and brake cooling slots in the cars flanks and the additional 3 air intakes on the nose.

The crude appearance earned the car a couple of nicknames - Il Mostro (monster) by the Ferrari mechanics and ‘the Anteater’ by the press.

The car tested extensively at Monza in September 1961, driven by Stirling Moss and Willy Mairesse, the engineers collecting a great deal more data to help refine the final production concept for the 250 GTO.
