Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is the causative lentivirus of acquired immune deficiency syndrome ( AIDS). Globally, there are roughly 37 million people living with HIV infection. Leaving untreated, HIV replication causes progressive CD4⁺ T cell loss and other immunological abnormalities, leading to increased risk for infections and oncological complications. Treatment with antiretroviral drugs is highly effective in preventing the development of AIDS. Key components of HIV-1 include the envelope glycoproteins, the capsid and the replication enzymes reverse transcriptase, integrase and protease. gp120 and gp41 glycoproteins are critical players of HIV entry into the host cells via CD4 receptor and CCR5 chemokine receptor by inducing fusion of the virus and the host cell membrane.

HumanCellsBio offers isolated Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (HIV PBMCs) from HIV-1 positive patients.  The patient donors are taking retroviral inhibitory medication.  

Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs) are a subset of leukocytes, which consist of a mixture of lymphocytes (T cells, B cells, and NK cells) and monocytes. The HIV-1 positive PBMCs are isolated from patient donors' peripheral whole blood via density gradient centrifugation and red blood cell lysis.

Leukopaks are obtained when they become available to our network of clinicians, by a donation process where blood is withdrawn from the donor via leukapheresis utilizing an apheresis machine such as the COBE Spectra Optia®. The donor’s white blood cells are selectively collected and the remaining blood is reinfused to the body.  We can also collect whole blood and plasma samples from the patients. Some disease types may have a long backorder depending on the frequency of the disease occurrence in the general population.
