Davies, as in Ray? As in The Kinks? I don’t know so, but I definitely think so. But they are not merely a retro 60’s band, as Deathray Davies also reference the rock ‘n‘ rollin‘ power pop of Cracker and the sweetly driving melodic bubblyness of the Go-Go's. That is, aside from singer John Dufilho sounding nothing like Belinda Carlisle (or any other woman). No, he’s got more of a Lou Reed vibe of indifference, but with just the right amount of nerdy nasalness to let you know you’re listening to an indie-pop record. Don't let the album title deceive you; The Kick And The Snare actually features all the usual elements of the standard drum kit, along with some thin and buzzy guitar, plunky bass lines, and some nice keyboard and piano touches, all in service of a tight set of finely written songs that are endlessly listenable.
After a 15-year nap, garage rock, exploratory pop band The Deathray Davies are back and are working on two new albums while seeing their back catalogue reissued through We Are Busy Bodies.
Principal songwriter, John Dufilho has kept busy with the Apples in Stereo, CLIFFFS and various other projects
