Pinot Gris’ from our VDP.Grosse Lage HENKENBERG always show a great balance of fruit, acidity and volume. It is a prototype for a cool climate Pinot Gris, earthy, herbal and salty with a lot of grip and acidity and never trivial or over matured.
The Henkenberg denomination stretches out on an exposed ridge between Oberrotweil and Burkheim towards the west. The soil mainly consists of weathered volcanic rock, garnet and loess in some places. Its coarse composition made up of different layers offers ideal ground for growing deep rooting vines. The Henkenberg has a south and southwest exposure. It is named for being the site of the gallows in medieval times.

100% Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris)
100% hand-picked. Pressed with a screw press achieving a high tannin extraction. The fermentation takes place in oak barrels of 1200 L without any filtration or sedimentation. The wood for these barrels is won from our own trees in the Kaiserstuhl and shipped to selected tonneleries in Burgundy for processing. The alcoholic fermentation with native yeasts takes place in the barrels at high temperatures, without any temperature control. After malolactic fermentation the wines are aged in the oak sur lie for 24 months, racked and blended into stainless steel tanks with the lees again for at least 6 months.
