Why this aircraft matters

PP-VPI was the first Boeing 747-400 ever delivered to Varig in May 1991. It represented a breakthrough for Latin American carriers at the time. Those jets featured modern avionics and winglets to reduce drag and boost fuel economy. 

Varig deployed it on long-haul routes such as São Paulo to Rome, and later to Hong Kong, Bangkok, Johannesburg, Frankfurt, Buenos Aires and Nagoya. 

The “polished” finish strips away logos and paints, leaving raw aluminium exposed. It gives the aircraft a clean, industrial aesthetic. 

Varig only operated 747-400s briefly. By the summer of 1994, cost pressures forced the return of all three jets, including PP-VPI, to their lessor. It later flew for Air New Zealand under a new identity. 

This model captures a moment when Varig reached for global ambition with one of its boldest jets. It marks transition—from local to international. It preserves a jigsaw piece of Brazilian aviation history.
