Woody Shaw's thrilling live show from 1979 is now available for the first time! This is one of the most rare recordings of unreleased material ever made! This 2-CD set includes a performance at OnkelPo's Carnegie Hall in Hamburg in July during Woody Shaw's European tour in the summer of 1979 with his quintet. An album of Woody Shaw's performance at this club, recorded in January 1982, has already been released on the same Jazzline label, and although it was an exciting and enjoyable performance, the 1979 performance was even more fulfilling and thrilling. The members include Carter Jefferson on saxophone and other musicians Woody trusted most, and their long solos are well worth listening to. Jefferson joined Woody's group in 1977 and played with it until the first half of 1980.Pianist Onazi Alan Gumbs first appeared with the group on the December 1977 Columbia recording of "Rosewood" and remained with Woody until the European tour in the summer of 1979. Bassist Stafford James joined Woody's group on the European tour in the spring of 1976 and remained with the group until 1983. Victor Lewis had already played on Woody's December 1974 Muse recording, "The Moontrane," and continued to play drums in Woody's band until 1980, with the exception of Lewis Hayes' participation. The only time all four of these musicians backed Woody together was on a European tour in the summer of 1979, so the appearance of this album is a very happy incident.So far from this tour, we have only been able to hear them perform in Italy on July 6 (the day before this album!) and at the NDRJazz Workshop in Hamburg on July 18 (just one song). ) and a performance at the NDRJazz Workshop in Hamburg on July 18 (just one song), so the appearance of a CD with the full stage performance (this is the first stage, so a second will be released eventually!
