The Caliber Armor AR550 Level III+ Multi-Curve Steel Body Armor Plate is a domestically manufactured AR550 steel plate rated to stop M855 green tip, 7.62x39 mild steel core, 7.62x51 M80 Ball, and 5.56x45 M193 — all at or above NIJ STD-0101.06 Level III+ special threat parameters. Available in 8x10, 10x12, and 11x14 inches in either Shooters Cut or SAPI Cut, and finished with either Standard Coating or PolyShield Spall Protection, the plate ships with a one-press multi-curve profile engineered for a body-conforming fit without sacrificing ballistic integrity.
AR550 is a hardened steel alloy selected for its resistance to high-velocity projectile deformation. The plates are independently tested at NIJ-accredited ballistic laboratories to meet and exceed NIJ STD-0101.06 standards, including the following special threats:
The 10x12 Shooters Cut, 10x12 SAPI Cut, and 11x14 Shooters Cut configurations with PolyShield Coating (model 19-AR550-SPC) carry NIJ 0101.06 Level III certification and appear on the NIJ Compliant Products List. All size and cut variants are independently tested to Level III+ special threat parameters at NIJ-accredited laboratories.
Two finish options are available at the time of purchase. The choice affects both weight and fragmentation behavior on impact.
PolyShield Spall Protection: Steel plates can produce dangerous fragmentation upon impact. PolyShield is a specially formulated coating that helps contain spall and protects the wearer from harmful debris. This is the coating used on the NIJ CPL-listed variants.
Standard Coating: A corrosion-resistant finish that protects the plate from the elements. Standard Coating provides little to no protection from projectile fragmentation.
The AR550 ships in two cuts. Shooters Cut reduces overall weight while maintaining sufficient coverage for vital organs and offers optimal mobility for active use. SAPI Cut provides a higher-profile cut for additional thoracic coverage and fits carriers designed around military SAPI pocket dimensions.
These plates are compatible with most standard plate carriers. Named carrier models confirmed to accept these plates include the Crye Precision JPC 2.0, 221B Tactical QRF Low Visibility Minimalist Plate Carrier, Condor MOPC, and 5.11 Tactec Plate Carrier. Contact us to confirm fitment for a specific carrier not listed here.
The one-press multi-curve design delivers the body-conforming profile typical of multi-curve ceramic plates while preserving the structural integrity of the steel core. Thickness dimensions carry a tolerance of ±1/8 in.; width and length dimensions are +0.00 to +0.25 in.; weights are ±5%.
The 8x10, 10x12, and 11x14 sizes cover the most common plate pocket dimensions across civilian and duty-grade plate carriers. Shooters Cut pockets and SAPI Cut pockets each accept their respective plate geometry — confirm your carrier's cut designation before ordering. The multi-curve profile seats flush against the torso without the pressure points common to flat steel plates, and the dimensional tolerances above mean the plates run slightly generous in width and length, which can affect fitment in tight-pocket carriers. Contact us if you need sizing confirmation for a specific carrier model.
These plates cannot be shipped to New York or Connecticut due to state body armor restrictions. They are subject to US export regulations under EAR and ITAR — export or re-transfer to any foreign end user without written approval from the US Department of Commerce or Department of State is prohibited. Under 18 U.S.C. § 931, anyone with a federal felony conviction for a crime of violence is prohibited from purchasing or possessing body armor.
Yes, for specific variants. The 10x12 Shooters Cut, 10x12 SAPI Cut, and 11x14 Shooters Cut plates with PolyShield Coating (model 19-AR550-SPC) are NIJ Listed under 0101.06 Level III on the NIJ Compliant Products List. All variants are independently tested at NIJ-accredited laboratories against Level III+ special threat parameters, which exceeds the standard NIJ Level III threat set.
The AR550 is rated to stop 7.62x39mm MSC at 123 grain, 5.56mm M855 BT at 62 grain (Green Tip), 7.62x51mm M80 Ball at 149 grain, and 5.56mm M193 at 56 grain. These represent the tested and validated threat set; performance against rounds outside this list is not stated.
NIJ Level III covers standard rifle threats including 7.62x51mm M80 Ball. Level III+ is a vendor-defined special threat designation covering additional rounds such as M855 green tip and 7.62x39 mild steel core that Level III alone does not address. Level IV is an NIJ-standardized rating covering armor-piercing .30 caliber rifle rounds; no AR550 variant in this listing is rated Level IV.
When a steel plate stops a bullet, the impact can produce metal fragments — called spall — that travel toward the wearer. PolyShield is a specially formulated coating applied to the plate's strike face that helps contain that spall and fragmentation. Standard Coating provides corrosion resistance but little to no protection from projectile fragmentation, so PolyShield is the recommended option for any use case where the wearer is at risk from secondary debris.
Shooters Cut removes material from the upper corners of the plate, reducing weight and improving shoulder and arm mobility — a common preference for active and dynamic use. SAPI Cut follows the stepped geometry used in military-spec plate carriers, providing a higher cut with additional upper-chest coverage. Both cuts are available across all three plate sizes; your carrier's plate pocket geometry determines which cut fits correctly.
