Collected from the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, individual photographers' archives, and contemporary photographers, the images retain their subjects' joy and dignity. The photographs come from different eras, but are arranged by themes such as children, work, the arts, everyday life, sports, portraits, and spirituality.
