The MIRA Safety Children's Nuclear Protection Kit pairs the MD-1 Kids Gas Mask with an NBC-77 SOF CBRN filter, a 40 mm NATO extension hose, a gas mask pouch, and 20 FDA-approved ThyroSafe potassium iodide tablets — delivering all-in-one CBRN protection for children aged 2 to 12. The MD-1 mask weighs no more than 500 g without the filter or bag, features a panoramic polycarbonate visor with greater than 70% field of vision, and carries a 10-year shelf life from its 2023 manufacture date. Available in Medium (ages 2–6) and Large (ages 6–12).

Who this is for

  • Parents building a family emergency kit: covers the youngest and most vulnerable family members with the same 40 mm NATO filter supply used by adult MIRA masks, so one filter stock covers the whole household.
  • Households in proximity to nuclear facilities or industrial chemical sites: provides a complete, shelf-stable solution for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear exposure scenarios.
  • Preparedness-minded caregivers who want a single grab-and-go package: the included pouch, hose, filter, and iodine tablets mean nothing needs to be sourced separately at the moment of need.

What the kit protects against

The MD-1 mask and NBC-77 SOF filter together address chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) airborne threats. The mask facepiece uses natural rubber or butyl rubber and seals around a child's face across a wide temperature range of -30°C to 50°C. Under controlled test conditions, the combination provides a minimum of 180 minutes of protection against S-mustard (sulfur mustard blister agent) at a contamination density of 17 ± 1 mg per 10 cm².

ThyroSafe potassium iodide tablets address the specific radiological risk of radioactive iodine uptake by the thyroid. Radioactive iodine released during a nuclear incident accumulates in the thyroid and can cause serious illness. Taking potassium iodide blocks that absorption. Each package contains 20 tablets at 65 mg each, and ThyroSafe is one of the only FDA-approved potassium iodide formulations available in the United States.

MD-1 mask design and compatibility

The MD-1 uses a STANAG 4155 (EN 148-1) compliant 40 mm x 1/7" filter thread — the same NATO-standard connection found on adult MIRA masks. This means one supply of 40 mm canister filters, including the NBC-77 SOF with its 20-year shelf life, serves both children and adults in the same household. The mask is also compatible with a Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR), which uses a powered fan unit to improve airflow and create positive pressure, reducing breathing fatigue during extended use. The PAPR is sold separately.

A five-point head harness holds the mask in position, and the panoramic polycarbonate visor maintains more than 70% field of vision. Exhalation resistance at 30 l/min airflow measures 90 Pa. The facepiece comes in navy blue; the mask body may ship in blue or black depending on availability.

Pouch and storage system

The included MIRA Safety Gas Mask Pouch stores the entire kit when not deployed. It accommodates the filter and hose during active use and features a flexible mounting system with padding for comfort during movement. The pouch is built to resist tearing under field conditions and includes a neck strap for carry.

Shelf life and storage requirements

MD-1 masks manufactured in 2023 carry a 10-year shelf life. The NBC-77 SOF filter carries a 20-year shelf life. To maintain that shelf life, store the mask in a dark, cool, dust-free environment with good ventilation and no sudden temperature changes. Acceptable storage temperatures run from 5°C to 25°C with relative humidity up to 60%. Do not expose to radiant heat, direct sunlight, fuels, solvents, lubricants, or flammable substances. Keep away from electrical equipment that generates ozone. Avoid deforming the rubber facepiece or internal components during storage, and inspect the mask regularly to confirm it seals effectively.

Important safety note — balloon test

All negative-pressure gas masks impose breathing resistance on the wearer. A balloon test is recommended before any emergency deployment: a child who can blow up a standard balloon with their own lung power has sufficient respiratory strength to use the MD-1 safely. Even when a child passes the balloon test, using the mask with a PAPR reduces fatigue significantly and provides added protection from airborne contaminants.

Frequently asked questions

What does this kit work with?

The MD-1 mask accepts any standard 40 mm NATO filter (EN 148-1 / STANAG 4155 thread), including MIRA Safety's full range of canister filters. It is also compatible with a Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR) for positive-pressure operation. Adult MIRA masks in your household use the same filter thread, so one filter supply covers everyone.

What sizes are available and which fits my child?

The MD-1 comes in two sizes: Medium fits children approximately 2 to 6 years old, and Large fits children approximately 6 to 12 years old. If you are unsure which size is right for your child, contact us before ordering.

How do I know if my child is strong enough to use a negative-pressure gas mask?

Perform a balloon test: if your child can blow up a standard balloon using only their own lung power, they have sufficient respiratory strength to use the MD-1. For children who pass the test but fatigue quickly, pairing the mask with a PAPR significantly reduces breathing effort. The PAPR is sold separately.

Why are potassium iodide tablets included in this kit?

Radioactive iodine released during a nuclear incident accumulates in the thyroid and can cause serious illness or death. Potassium iodide blocks that absorption when taken promptly. The included ThyroSafe tablets are an FDA-approved formulation — one of the only such products available in the United States — and having them on hand before an incident is essential, as demand spikes immediately after any nuclear event.

How long can I store this kit before it expires?

The MD-1 mask carries a 10-year shelf life from its 2023 manufacture date. The NBC-77 SOF filter carries a 20-year shelf life. Store the entire kit within the stated temperature and humidity parameters (5°C to 25°C, up to 60% relative humidity) to maintain those ratings. Inspect the mask seal regularly during storage.

Can this kit be shipped to my state?

CBRN gas masks and potassium iodide tablets are not body armor and are not subject to the state body armor restrictions that apply to ballistic products. No federal felony restriction under 18 U.S.C. § 931 applies to this product category. If you have questions about your specific location, contact us.
