Bernard Purdie, the legendary funk drummer who has played on classic records by everyone from Aretha Franklin to Steely Dan, recorded this album in early 1971 at the Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey studio of legendary engineer and audio enthusiast Rudy Van Gelder. and recorded by Purdie himself. This is the first wide reissue in 30 years! Cut by Kevin Gray from the original analog tapes and pressed by RTI on 180g vinyl in chip-on-jacket. Bernard "Pretty" Purdy was an American drummer considered one of the most influential and innovative funk musicians, known for his precise musical time keeping and his "Purdy Shuffle," a distinctive use of triplets against a half-time backbeat. He burst onto the New York music scene in the early 1960s with his first hit with Mickey & Sylvia, which launched his illustrious career.This led to a 25-year relationship with Aretha Franklin. Purdy served as Aretha Franklin's musical director beginning in 1970, a position he held for five years. He also provided the backbeat for Steely Dan's "Aja" and anchored sessions for The Rolling Stones, James Brown, and Tom Jones. This album was originally released on Prestige, but was released on Jazz Dispensary (within Craft Recordings in Concord), which discovers jazz/funk and releases the popular Jazz Dispensary series of compilations on RSD.
