The Armored Republic Trauma Pad is a non-ballistic, non-Newtonian foam insert designed to sit behind your body armor and reduce backface deformation (BFD) and blunt force energy transfer to your body. Available in six sizes — 6"x6", 8"x10", 9"x9", 10"x12", 11"x14", and 11"x15" — these pads pair with Armored Republic plates and panels as well as most third-party armor systems and plate carriers. Trauma pads add no ballistic protection whatsoever; their sole function is to dampen the force of a stopped round before it reaches the wearer.

Who this is for

  • Plate carrier users: anyone wearing hard or soft armor who wants to reduce the blunt impact force transferred to their torso when armor stops a round
  • Comfort-focused wearers: those using plate carriers without built-in pocket padding, where a trauma pad doubles as a comfort layer during extended wear
  • Budget-conscious builders: anyone assembling an armor kit incrementally who wants to address BFD risk without upgrading to a higher-cost plate system

Compatibility with parent armor

The trauma pad is compatible with Armored Republic body armor and most other armor systems and plate carriers. It is designed to be worn behind the armor plate or panel, between the armor and the wearer's body. The six available sizes map directly to common plate dimensions: 6"x6" for side plates, 8"x10" and 9"x9" for sub-SAPI and specialty cuts, 10"x12" for standard front/back plates, and 11"x14" or 11"x15" for larger plate formats. Confirm your plate pocket's interior clearance before ordering — a pad that exceeds the pocket's depth or footprint will not sit flat.

Function

When a bullet strikes body armor, the stopped round's kinetic energy does not simply disappear. Soft armor flexes and catches the projectile; steel alloy hard armor shatters it; ceramic hard armor dissipates the force by fracturing; polyethylene hard armor captures the projectile by melting around it. In every case, some residual energy compresses the armor rearward into the wearer — this is backface deformation. The Armored Republic Trauma Pad is specially engineered to absorb and spread that residual force across a larger surface area, reducing the peak pressure and the risk of blunt-force injury at the point of impact.

Trauma pads outperform soft armor used as a BFD buffer. While placing a soft armor panel behind a hard rifle plate is technically possible, the BFD reduction achieved is minimal compared to a purpose-built non-Newtonian pad. Armored Republic plates in standalone configurations already perform well against BFD in testing, and adding a trauma pad improves on that baseline further.

Trauma pads are non-ballistic. They do not stop, deflect, or slow any projectile. Do not rely on a trauma pad for any ballistic protection.

Frequently asked questions

What does this trauma pad work with?

It works with Armored Republic body armor and most other armor systems and plate carriers. Place it behind the plate or panel — between the armor and your body — in any plate pocket or soft armor pocket with sufficient interior clearance. If your carrier's plate pocket is a close fit, measure the interior depth before selecting a size.

Is this trauma pad NIJ-rated on its own?

No. Trauma pads are non-ballistic and carry no NIJ ballistic rating. They are not tested or rated under any NIJ standard. Their purpose is strictly to reduce backface deformation force — they provide zero ballistic protection and should never substitute for a rated armor plate or panel.

Are trauma pads worth adding to an armor kit?

Yes. There is almost no situation where a trauma pad will not improve outcomes when armor stops a round. If your budget is tight, prioritize the armor itself first — but revisit adding a trauma pad when possible. Additionally, some plate carriers lack padding in their plate pockets, and a trauma pad adds a meaningful comfort layer during extended daily wear.

Can I use soft armor as a trauma pad behind a hard plate instead?

It is possible but not recommended as a substitute. Soft armor placed behind a hard rifle plate does reduce some BFD, but the reduction is minimal compared to a purpose-built non-Newtonian trauma pad. A dedicated trauma pad is significantly more effective at absorbing and spreading residual impact energy.

Does this fit my 10"x12" plate carrier?

The 10"x12" size is the right starting point for standard front and back plate pockets. Confirm your carrier's interior plate pocket dimensions — the pad needs to sit flat inside the pocket without folding. If your pocket runs slightly tight, the 8"x10" offers a smaller footprint that fits in most medium plate carriers without interference.

Can this be shipped to my state?

Trauma pads are non-ballistic accessories with no known state-level shipping restrictions. Under 18 U.S.C. § 931, anyone with a federal felony conviction for a crime of violence is prohibited from purchasing or possessing body armor — confirm your eligibility before ordering.
