Description:
The thirteenth release in ACT's "Piano Works" series of solo piano recordings. This is the 13th release in ACT's "Piano Works" series, which began with Kühn's first solo work and continues with his second solo work (as a duo with Michael Walney; this is the first time a duo work has been released in this series). This is the only duo work in this series.) and now this is the third one. The concept of this album is to reconstruct melodies written by Ornette Coleman for solo piano. Kuehn and Ornette performed together from 1995 to 2000, giving 16 concerts, and they wrote 10 new songs in the studio before each concert. Kuehn is the only person who owns the scores and recordings of 170 songs from the time he and Ornette performed together, and the songs on this album, except for "Lonely Woman," have never been released as works. The album begins with Ornette's signature song, "Lonely Woman. Kuehn's performance, in which he plays the melody as if he is biting each note, is somewhat sad and seems to be a requiem for Ornette. The series of previously unreleased songs that follow are rooted in the blues, hymns and gospel, and are the very essence of Ornette's simple but beautiful world. Inspired by the melodies, Kuehn's improvisations are sometimes wild, sometimes aesthetic, and further develop and expand Ornette's world through Kuehn's interpretations. Only the last 14 tracks are Kuehn's compositions. This album is a collaboration that transcends dimensions between the free jazz icon Ornette and the great pianist Joachim Keune, with whom Ornette has collaborated for a long time. After a lapse of almost 20 years, Ornette's music has once again been infused with soul.
