The story

The construction of Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park was one of the most challenging feats of the early 20th century. Men labored day and night, carving through stone with rudimentary tools and sheer determination. Among them were individuals who recognized something extraordinary about the land they worked on—its rugged beauty, its stillness, and its testimony to something greater.

Piegan Mountain, with its massive cliffs and towering presence, became a symbol of the divine. As workers carved the 408-foot tunnel, they couldn’t ignore the awe-inspiring landscapes around them: Heaven’s Peak rising like a throne, McDonald Creek weaving its way below like veins of life. 

As many others and myself pass through these tunnels, we are overwhelmed by the presence of something great, ancient, and mysterious. 

The grandeur of the mountain and the echoing silence in the tunnel are acts of worship.

The rocks themselves tell a story, etched with streaks of white and amber, like tears. For some, it was just a geological phenomenon. But for those who believe, the mountain offers praise to its Creator—a silent, enduring cry declaring the glory of God.

When we are silent, when we forget to praise, the rocks will cry out.
