A scarce FE Thomas “Mahogany” bamboo fly rod, 8'6", 3-piece, 2-tip, and built what feels like a #5 in the old wet fly style action. Serial #3 stamped on the butt cap. 4.1 ounces. This is an early rod dating to 1913. Fair condition due to a repair wrap on the upper mid section and considerable bag impression on all the sections. The rod is full length and in original condition, however. The grip has been cleaned leaving a bit of roughness. Full flexing wet fly action, as mentioned. Dark cane wrapped red with no edges. A set of eight signature wraps in red at the check and four at the male ferrules. The stripper is an orange agate and the snakes are reverse twist heavy wire and sized for a silk line. There is almost no wear to the inner snake guides. The step ferrules fit tight and are oxidized black. The rod is straight. The grip is 5 1/2" long and shaped to a full wells. The cap and ring seat is mortised and the wood looks like white cedar. The butt cap has a slight pocket and is stamped “F.E. Thomas, Special, Bangor Me.” in a cartouche. The green poplin rod bag has some wear holes in it. The rod tube is original with brass hardware plated with nickel. A super rare model and though it has a few issues, it's exceedingly hard to find these in full original condition.
