A charming Victorian silver match case, hallmarked for 1889, created from solid sterling silver. The front is finely engraved with an interlaced monogram reading “J.M.D.”, a lovely personal touch typical of the period.

The case has that wonderful tactile quality so distinctive of late 19th century design. Smooth, weighty, and made to be used and treasured, hence a few little dents! . The hinged lid opens with a satisfying snap, revealing its original interior and, delightfully, a few matches still remain inside, a small link to its past owner.

This would once have been carried in a waistcoat pocket or on a watch chain, a gentleman’s essential accessory for lighting candles, fires, or pipes. Today, it stands as a handsome relic of Victorian daily life.
