A really wonderful piece of early Civil War ephemera on wonderfully quirky soldier stationary. Largely chatty, if pessimistic material.
But the last line is the keeper, "This war is nothing but a humbug. I thought that I went to war to save the country, but [now] I believe that I went to war to save some of the jackass necks which are at Washington."
Addressed from Camp Griffin in Virginia, December 29th, 1861, the author was Abraham N. Wolf, Jr. [1837-1895] from Allentown, Pennsylvania. Accompanied by extensive research documents including a scanned photo of Camp Griffin in 1861, biographical information, a history of the Pennsylvania 47th Infantry, scan of the burial record and tombstone of Wolf, etc.
