A nice EF Payne Salmon Rod, 9'6", 3-piece, 3-tips, and built for what feels to me like a #8 line. Medium, full flexing action. A very unusual rod from the Payne shop, this one is all original except for the wraps on the third tip. All of the guides on the two original tips as well as the mid are circle guides. The third tip may have had circle guides but they were removed and replaced with snakes and the thread color doesn't quite match, though the ferrule is correct and identical to the rest of the rod. The varnish is in excellent condition for a rod that dates to the late 1950's. The main wraps are brown with black edges and extra edges of yellow and purple at the keeper and male ferrules. One of the circle guide wrapped tips has an invisible wrap just above the second guide up from the ferrule. The damage appears to be a hook dig on the corner of the flat. The ferrules are tight and retain 99% of the original oxidation. The grip is 7" long and is turned to a western style. The reel seat is an aluminum uplocking seat with a hidden pocket cap and a varnished spanish cedar spacer. The screwlock is stamped "Payne" in a cartouche and "Reg Us Pat Off". A nickel silver pullout plug for the fighting butt has a target and is stamped with the number "3". The fighting butt itself is 5 3/4" long and the corked secion is 4" long. This rod comes with a canvas outer bag and a full sized Payne rod tube with the data sticker 100% intact and a tip tube as well as a pocket for the fighting butt. There is a grey felt pad on the brass top.
