Freemasonry's connection to the earliest formation of America is the stuff of history and, thank you Nicolas Cage*, legend. And the Philadelphia Masonic Temple is one of the most important Masonic associated landmarks.

Freemasonry was active in Philadelphia from the early 1700's. When the still-existing architectural marvel was begun, in 1868, the cornerstone was set with the same gavel used by George Washington on the cornerstone of the Nation's Capitol building in 1793. The present trunk was most likely purchased and customized for use in temple upon its completion in 1873. "Sole leather" trunks were constructed almost exclusively in the 1860's and 1870's. 

The present example is in a good structural state with usual wear, patina, the handles damaged as shown, etc., but in overall good working condition. Embossed by Dunn & Co. and Masonic Temple, Philadelphia. 

The perfect functional and architectural piece for the collector.
