What a phenomenal letter! A 1.5pp autograph letter, entirely in hand of William Carey, probably because it involves his son, and then signed by William Carey, Joshua Marshman [in his own hand], and William Ward [in his own hand]. Addressed to Andrew Fuller, acting as Secretary for the Baptist Missionary Society.
William Carey letters are very, very rare on the market, exceptionally desirable, and this a unique example, including his joy at seeing his own son, Jabez, experience a sense of call to missions!
I can't be certain, but if my recollections are correct, this is the first William Carey letter I have ever handled.
"Dear Bro. Fuller,
We have already written to you respecting Amboyna. We now have the happiness of sending you word that we have had a letter from the Governor General in Council requesting us to send Brethren to Amboyna to superintend the Malay Schools. Jabez Carey's heart has been touched as we hope by Divine Grace: we have perceived for some time back a gradual change in him; and he has now volunteered his services for Amboyna; and we are thinking of accepting him, but we are anxious that he shoudl have immediate help from England: send immediately a pious man, of some experience, but of real solid piety, to join him, direct at Amboyna or send him first to us.
We have not time to enlarge, but remain,
Dear Br.
