Very rare with no other copies on the market, this was the first publication in the United States of Newton's famous Letters to a Wife from a Voyage to Africa. It details the atrocities of slavery and Newton's own personal conversion in the form of letters written to his wife from the journey. One of the most significant early efforts of the abolitionist movement of England to influence their friends in the United States.

Original plain American calf with simple gold ruled horizontal lines on spinn and a contrasting morocco spine label. a 3/4 inch chip out of base of spine and a 1/2 inch out of the head. Corners rubbed through. Both endpapers show signs of some sort of label removal. A few corners turned. On the whole, very solid and clean.
