This is a 3D seagull reversible wool coat from Jean Charles de Castelbajac's 1980 Paris Fall/Winter runway collection (as seen in the last image).  It's made from pure wool and has an all-over seagull print, with whimsical 3D seagulls protruding from the shoulders.

This coat was part of his early, experimental collection and the design is a staple of his, highlighting his signature, pop-art and surrealist approach to fashion.

These seagull coats are highly collectible and rare vintage items, with examples documented in museums worldwide, including New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

French designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac is a creative polymath with a multifaceted career spanning more than 50 years. He’s best-known for his fashion work; Madonna, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and, most recently, Drake have all worn his pop-inspired clothing. In 2018, he was named artistic director of Benetton Group.

A spirit of collaboration running throughout his oeuvre is what motivates the Renaissance man, whose artistic partnerships harken back to the 1980s when Andy Warhol and Vivienne Westwood posed in his first ad campaigns. In 1990, Keith Haring created the invitation for his winter collection, one of the artist’s final drawings.

This coat is in excellent vintage condition and would make a savvy addition to any collector's wardrobe or archive.
