1833 J. W. ALEXANDER. Writes to W. B. Sprague Re: Presbyterian Magazine - Asahel Nettleton Revivals.A very attractive single page example of a letter written by J. W. Alexander [Princeton Professor, preacher of the 1857 1858 prayer revival in Philadelphia, etc.] as editor of the Presbyterian to W. B. Sprague. They discuss the reason for delays in publication, and interestingly, hint at some public scrum regarding Asahel Nettleton in 1833. Interestingly, this letter was written during the very least revival he ever preached, i. e. September of 1833.

In full:

Philadelphia 20th Sept. 1833

Rev and dear Sir,

Accept my thanks for the MS which I have this day received. I write without having read more than half, but what I have examined is such as I shall have great pleasure in making public. Indeed I have fallen upon nothing which strikes me as unduly lenient or unfaithfully flattering.

I write, however, thus early, to beg that you will, as soon as may be entirely convenient, accomplish your purpose of sending us a review of Burder's Life. And pray, do not sting yourself for room. You have no idea, my dear Sir, how this voracious periodical exhausts my poor abilities to cater for it. This is the true cause of our frequent delays. If you could inveigh any trustworthy person into the number of our contributors, you would greatly oblige us.

I am anxious to know what has become of Mr. Nettleton. You perhaps observe the ungracious flout towards him in the Philadelphian of the 19th . . .

I am, dear Sir, with Christian respect and affection,
Yours
James W. Alexander

Rev. Doctor Sprague.

In very good condition.
