An excellent Edward Vom Hofe Restigouche Salmon Reel, model 423, in 2/0 size. 3 5/8" diameter with a 1 7/8" frame width (recall that Restigouche models did not always follow the standard Vom Hofe sizing conventions and this one is slightly larger than a "standard" 2/0). Set up for RHW. Philadelphia era. Superb original condition. The frame has some minor and normal discoloration spots but no dings, noticeable scratches, or other evidence of much use. The hard rubber sideplates are smooth and clean, with just the faintest whisper of two minor scratches on the crankside plate. Full length foot with "423" and "2/0" stamped into the crossbar. The drag is in good mechanical shape and adjusts nicely (the red lacquer on a few of the drag indicator has faded but most are present). The screws are in excellent condition overall with just the faintest suggestion of use. Comes in the original Vom Hofe Box. One of the nicer later era examples of this model and size that I've come across. A salmon fishing classic.
This reel also comes from the collection of Dr. Earl Fleegler, a passionate angler and well-known collector in the fly fishing community as well as a renowned hand surgeon. Dr. Fleegler was close friends with a number of angling luminaries including Tom Maxwell, Vince Marinaro, and Stan Bogdan (among others) and devoted considerable effort to collecting some of the finest tackle available from masters of the craft.
