Produced from Tempranillo 60% and Garnacha 40% , the grapes are sourced from old bush vines in Alto Najerilla, near to the Cárdenas river. This area, between Cordovín, Badarán and Cárdenas, is between 600 and 710 metres above sea level, and the soil is ferrous clay. The grapes are hand-harvested into 200kg crates, and sorted by hand at the winery. After 4 days cold pre-fermentation maceration, with short pump-overs, the wine is fermented and then aged in 225 litre French oak barrels (2nd and 3rd year) for 24 months, followed by at least 12 months in bottle before release.
"The very classical 2018 Viña Dorana is serious and austere, with the freshness of a cool year, something less and less frequent nowadays. It's a harmonious blend of 60% Garnacha and 40% Tempranillo, rescuing the fine wines from yesteryear, with good ripeness, 14% alcohol and the freshness from the year. It matured for two years exclusively in French oak barrels, giving it a slightly more modern twist and a more fruit-forward character. It should improve with time in bottle, as there is still a trace of oak in the finish. It was bottled in July 2024." 94pts Luis Gutiérrez The Wine Advocate
This is drinking beautifully.
Pronounced black cherry, cedar and spice aromas with classic roasted meat notes. The palate is supple yet richly-flavoured with layers of dark plum, bramble fruit and cherry supported by well-integrated tannins. Oak is beautifully integrated on a very long toasty finish.
