On 17 March 1951, a spiky-haired, wiry-limbed, rebellious ball of energy whizzed onto the pages of Beano. Since then, Dennis the Menace has become the comic’s most popular character, along with his loyal friend Gnasher, an Abyssinian wire-haired tripe hound. Created by artist David Law and editor George Moonie, Dennis swiftly captured the attention of young readers with his rebellious and carefree attitude.           

Although subtle tweaks have been made to Dennis’s appearance over the years, his mischievous persona and penchant for pranks remains largely the same today as it did in the 1950s. Over the decades, Dennis’s hilarious hijinks have been captured through an evolving media landscape, from print and television to online media. The king of mischief is cherished by multitudes of generations, from new fans viewing his antics on YouTube to seasoned readers of Beano. To mark 75 years since his first appearance in the comic, Dennis now whizzes onto a UK 50p coin from The Royal Mint with his loyal friend Gnasher in tow.
