A grand 18th century French Directoire period table de drapier from a draper's atelier in Narbonne, a wealthy port city in Southern France in the Occitanie region, circa 1780s. Handcrafted of solid walnut with a marquetry baguette or band on the reeded edge top, this monumental drapery table features four large drawers and is raised on six elegantly carved scrolling legs with a center column and large bottom shelf. Drapery tables were a common feature in the cloth merchant’s shops, but exceptionally fine tables like this one were very rare. Featuring an abundant surface area that would have been used by seamstresses to measure and cut fabrics and textiles with the drawers below on each side for storing shears, scissors, snips, and other tools of the trade. The large shelf on the bottom provided space for storing extra fabrics. This superb French draper's table with its rich, warm patina will be a statement piece that adds character to any room. Perfect as a kitchen island or console table, it will also work well in a foyer, restaurant, or as a store display. We have seen many fine drapery tables, but this one is by far the most beautiful and spectacular one we have ever seen.
