A wonderful letter with two important Revival associations.

First, the letter is written by Edward Payson Hammond [1831-1910]. Hammond was involved as a preacher in the prayer revivals in New York and Philadelphia from 1857-1859, in a revival at Dumfries in 1861 [See The Revival in Dumfries: A Record of Religious Awakening during the Visit of E. P. Hammond in 1861], in Lawrence, Kansas in 1872, etc., etc., etc., His life as a revivalist has been immortalized in the classic revival biography, The Reaper and the Harvest; Scenes and Incidents in Connection with the Holy Spirit in the Life and Ministry of Edward Payson Hammond. 

The second involves Dr. E. N. Kirk. Kirk had been an early co-laborer of Charles G. Finney as a very young man, then involved as a revivalist himself, and one of the chief preachers during the Boston instance of the prayer revival of 1850's. 

The present letter, to an unnamed correspondent, has apparently been written at the request of Dr. Kirk to correct a misunderstanding regarding comments made while Hammond was preaching in Newburyport and some controversy with a Professor A that is "injurious to the cause of Christ."
