Originally commissioned in November 1929 by the RKKA and based on the T-18, the SU-18 was designed to be a formidable force on the battlefield. This model pays homage to the prototype, which was a modified version of the captured French Renault FT-17BS, retaining its design but featuring a distinctive truncated pyramid-shaped turret. Equipped with the powerful 76.2mm regimental gun model 1927, complete with a slotted muzzle brake to minimize rollback, this model captures the essence of the original SU-18.

Despite the initial decision to proceed with production in June 1930, the SU-18's design faced challenges due to its limited ammunition capacity and the constraints of the T-18's narrow-gauge chassis and high center of gravity. These limitations led to the project's eventual abandonment in favor of more advanced self-propelled gun designs, halting further development of the SU-18.
