An excellent EF Payne salmon rod, 9'6", 3-piece, 2-tip, built for a #8 line. Weighs 7.1 ounces on my scale. The hangtag on this is a replacement but states this rod as a 410. Generally in very good condition with original wraps, good ferrules, and all sections full length. This rod shows some signs of having been touched up lightly, with oxidation on the ferrules re-darkened and overvarnished, extra coatings applied to the guide wraps in places, and the grip has lengthwise striations that suggest some sanding. This is a 1950's era rod with ferrule plugs and a perfection stripper. The stripper has a slight downward bend but still seems solid so I would not mess with it. One tip has a varnish chip from a near miss with a hook. The snakes guides show some internal wear. The wraps are brown with dark brown edges and an extra band of yellow and purple at the keeper, male ferrules, and tip-tops. As stated earlier the wraps have been overvarnished in places. The rod has the typical cracks at the ferrule wraps from casting. The grip is a 7" long western style with a hidden pocket cap. The reel seat spacer looks like varnished walnut to me. The uplocking screwlock is aluminum and has a pull out fighting butt plug. The nut is stamped "Payne" in a cartouche and "reg US Pat Off" and the bottom of the barrel is stamped "Sold by, Abercrombie and Fitch Co, New York". The pull out plug has a two ring target and the part #8 stamped in the center. The fighting butt is a well done replacement. The rod packs in a bag and tube with a brass top and grey felt insert. The canvas overbag has a pouch for the fighting butt.
