Set within a simple gold cased mount, the fob holds a beautifully carved milk white intaglio, the soft colour of the stone providing the perfect ground for the lively scene engraved upon it.

The carving depicts the devil, complete with horns, tail, and pitchfork, cheekily carrying Cupid upon his back. Surrounding the scene is the French motto “LE DIABLE EMPORTE L’AMOUR.” This phrase translates literally to “The devil take's love,” however we would say it more as “The hell with love.”

During the Georgian period, fobs and seals were often engraved with humorous or provocative mottos, reflecting the wearer’s personality or wit. This example is particularly delightful, combining playful imagery with a bold sentiment.
