A museum quality Enoch Wood designed black basalt mourning-style bust of George Whitefield [1714-1770]. Measuring in at a rather impressive 13.5 inches in height and 8 inches wide, it is one of the rarest pieces of Whitefield ephemera.
Dating to between 1784 and 1789, this form rarely survives, and this is excessively better than most examples that have come to market. There are two firing cracks, as usual, and some light firing imperfections in finish. Again, this is usual. The detail is in fine shape and lacks the usual chips and nicks at the extremities.
Rear cartouce reads, "Rev. George Whitefield Died Sept 30, 1770, Aged 56. Enoch Wood. Sculp Burselm."
The best example I ever expect to see.
